| Machinist Mate 2nd Class Joseph Allen Ashley (U.S.N.), a lifelong resident of Manchester, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the age of 24.
Joey died as a result of severe head injuries he sustained when the nuclear submarine U.S.S. San Francisco, home-based in Guam, ran aground while out on maneuvers in the South Pacific. |

| Commanding Officer, Submarine Squadron Fifteen, Capt. Bradley R. Gehrke, shakes the hand of Hospital Corpsman 1st Class James H. Akin at an awards ceremony for Sailors assigned to the Los Angeles class attack submarine San Francisco (SSN-711), at Polaris Point, Guam Mar. 25, 2005. The Navy awarded Petty Officer Akin the Meritorious Service Medal for administering emergency triage to 70 injured crew members over an intense two-day period aboard San Francisco after it grounded south of Guam Jan. 8, 2005. Akin organized the Crew's Mess into a makeshift emergency trauma center, prioritized medical care and rapidly stabilized two of the most seriously injured personnel. |
| A Solemn Anniversary - |
| A year ago today, USS San Francisco (SSN 711) ran aground on a seamount near the Caroline Islands, resulting in the death of MM2(SS) Joseph Ashley. A lot of words have been written about who was to blame for this grounding, and what the Sub Force can do to prevent it from happening again, but today, I'd like to focus on what I think is important: the professionalism of the crew of the San Francisco in bringing their stricken ship home, and the brotherly love that they've demonstrated for each other throughout this trying year.
